Canceled

So we got all the way down to pre-op this morning, and the anesthesiologist was not comfortable going ahead with the surgery when James had recently had a cold/fever -- since it's an elective surgery, she would prefer that he be as healthy as possible to reduce the risk of post-operative respiratory complications, particularly since he's a preemie.

On the one hand, I am really glad that she was willing to make that call and put his safety first (peds anesthesiology here has always been great), but on the other hand, we're really disappointed to have to delay -- we'll probably be rescheduled for early June. And if their decision rule is to wait if a child has had a recent fever, someone could have told us that earlier -- we were very clear with everyone that he'd had a recent cold, and so it would have been better to avoid the hospital stay, IV, bowel prep, etc.

Sorry to hear about the cancelation--I am sure it is hard to be on a roller coaster of preparation like that. Regarding the cold setting things off, I remember that Lachlan had a cold prior to his surgery last year, but they let him proceed after a checkup. They were concerned, but felt he recovered enough for the surgery. Maybe it was just the anesthesiologist--ours was a jerk, so maybe he wasn't that cautious either?
Good luck on the procedure when it actually happens.

So sorry! But to be on the side of caution is always better, although draining for the parents! You have been through so much and so successful in all of the recovery, don't let this get to you!

I won't even comment on the hospital issue as I could write a book on the lack of humankind when it comes to nurses and hospitals. It takes special people to work in a hospital and unfortunately some just look at it as a job. Oops, I said I would not go there! However, when you do run across that one special nurse or doctor, you will never forget them!

So sorry James even had to go through the overnight stay. You would have thought that they would have made that decision beforehand!

Anyways, heads up and smile like James always seems to be doing!

Love you guys

Auntie Ann
