Cog Railway

Mike chose our first hotel in New Hampshire because it was close to the Mount Washington Cog Railway.  We wanted to be sure to be there early, and we ended up having plenty of time.  (We made good use of that time in the gift shop, including purchasing some extra layers of clothes!)

The summit of Mount Washington is known for having "the world's worst weather."  Apparently we were fairly lucky with the weather, because when the clouds parted right before the train left, one of the train staff commented that it was the first time they'd seen the peak in three days.

The ride was really cool -- you definitely feel that you're at a steep angle, especially if you stand up!  And then the top was cold -- according to the information screen, it was about 35 degrees with a wind chill of 20, and wind gusts averaging about 40 miles per hour.  It was hard to be outside for long!

We had about an hour at the summit -- they had an indoor area with seating, a snack bar where all the hikers were warming up with soup, and a small museum. It was quite crowded, with a mix of train riders and hikers. (We ended up getting separated and spending some time just finding everyone again!) The weather was crazy because we'd have a few moments of clear skies and beautiful vistas, then clouds would roll in and you could barely see anything, and then the cycle would repeat again.

The wind was pretty intense -- it even blew Matthew's train ticket out of his pocket, but fortunately it was caught in the edge of the railing and he rescued it. :)

It was a very fun experience!
