Clinic in 'Cuse

James's gymnastics clinic was in Syracuse last weekend. (A clinic is a big training session with lots of different kids and coaches, where they rotate around to different stations and work on skills/routines for the upcoming competition season.)  As usual, he had a great time, and as usual, it was a rainy weekend there. :)

For lunch, Matthew and Mike and I went out to Destiny USA mall, which was fun. (The gym is actually located in a different shopping mall, but a dying one -- it's mostly vacant stores now, which is kind of sad.)  Matthew had downloaded Pokemon Go and was on a quest for Pokemon, but there weren't many there, to our surprise.

I asked James what his favorite part of the clinic was, and he had two of them. First, at the end of the clinic, each coach picks one boy who he thought was the hardest worker.  James was picked for parallel bars, and the coach (not someone we knew) said that it was because he had good form and was a good listener. Yay, James!  His prize was a new backpack, which was pretty cool!

His other favorite was the Handstand Battle Royale -- a huge handstand contest among all the boys.  James came in third (and one of his teammates came in first by staying up the longest!)  (Wish we had been there to see that, but it was right after lunch and we were still at the other mall.)  I will not comment on the wisdom of doing a handstand contest right after lunch, but apparently it all worked out okay. :)
