Old San Juan

It seems a bit unfair that I get to spend Mike's birthday in a beautiful tropical locale and he does not!  (The first five pictures are from the grounds of the hotel.  They even have a private beach -- I took a swim after walking around in the heat!  The water is very clear with no real waves in the lagoon part.)

The conference didn't start until this evening, so I spent some of the day touring Old San Juan.  It's very pretty!  Many of the buildings are painted bright pastel colors, and the old forts remind me of St. Augustine.

One of the pictures is a man banging a coconut on the curb. Someone asked him why he was doing that, and he said because they wouldn't let them have machetes there.  :)

The last picture is a traditional Puerto Rican dish called mafongo -- meat on top of a bed (or in this case, a cup) of plantains.  And of course, a pina colada to go with it!
