Singapore's Chinatown is mostly touristy, but still a fun way to spend an afternoon. I got off the bus near People's Park, and the part I saw of it was kind of dirty and smelly. (There were also several men who had set up shop with a chair and what looked like piles of shoe soles -- apparently if you need the bottoms of your shoes repaired, the People's Park is the place to go.)
Across the street are shopping and food streets (not dirty or smelly); the shopping was somewhat similar to Bugis Junction, but slightly less frenetic and with more Chinese-themed souvenirs on offer.
Nearby, past some construction, is the Maxwell Food Center (supposedly one of the best hawker centers). A lot of the stalls were closed since it was a Sunday, but Tian Tian Chicken Rice was open -- and apparently they usually have huge lines, but I was there at an off time, so I didn't have to wait too long. It was very tasty!
