Road Trip Begins

Just a few days after we returned from Florida, Walt and Georgia flew into Buffalo, and we embarked on our Northeastern road trip.  Our first stop was at Port Byron Erie Canal Heritage Center, which Mike just spotted off the side of the freeway.  We didn't explore the whole thing, but it had a cute little musuem. (The museum told the story of the area by focusing on a man who had immigrated there and his dog, and by coincidence, there was a dog visiting that looked just like the museum dog!) The kids and I ventured outdoors, where unfortunately there were plenty of mosquitoes!

Our next stop was Fort Stanwix in Rome, NY.  It turns out, by the way, that Rome, New York is nothing at all like Rome, Italy.  (Among other things, it's much smaller.)  Fort Stanwix is a reconstructed fort from the Revolutionary War, known as "the fort that never surrendered."  (Apparently it was such a miserable place to be, though, that when the fort was eventually abandoned, the soldiers leaving burned it down!)  The visitor center was closed, but the fort itself was open (although our weather was not ideal -- drizzly rain).  We did have a quite enthusiastic guide giving us information about the fort, though, and a couple of staff members dressed up in period costumes.

We then continued on to our first overnight stop, Lake George. We had originally thought we might get there in time to do a boat ride on the lake, but thunderstorms meant that outdoor activities were not an option!
