Wide World of Sports
Over the boys' February break, we had a fun road trip down to Orlando (after flying into Gville) for James's gymnastics meet at ESPN's Wide World of Sports. (It's a Disney property, and no, the meet was not televised on ESPN or anywhere!) His coach likes an excuse to get down to the warm weather. :)
We went down the night before with my mom and her friend. The AirBnb was not the world's greatest, but it was just for a night. :) And we enjoyed a nice dinner at Sweet Tomatoes!
The venue is funny because the girl's gyms are huge and gorgeous, with stadium seats (just like you'd see for some fancy meet on TV)...but then you walk past that to the boys' gym which is basically a glorified warehouse. No discount on the exorbitant ticket price, though. :) Oh well!
It was a high level of competition; it wasn't their best meet, but our boys did pretty well. James had his usual pattern for this season -- great rings, p-bars, and high bar, OK floor, adequate mushroom, and not-so-great vault. But it was an exciting day because James and his teammate both did their first kips in a competition! (This is a high bar move that's one of the big challenges at this level.)
Part of why this meet was a little hard was that we were instructed to arrive 45 minutes early (because this meet will start sessions early if the previous one ends early), but the session did not start early, so I think everyone was pretty hungry and tired by the end. (And the lady doing the awards really needed to move it along a bit faster!)
James was hungry and grumpy by the time we were leaving -- but then he had a few Ritz crackers, and while we were waiting for Mike to get the car (and giving Matthew some time to catch Pokemon on Swinub Community Day), James spotted some kids playing soccer. (The venue hosts a ton of different sporting events.) He immediately lit up, went over and asked if he could play with them, and kicked the ball around for a while. (I warned him sternly that he was not to slide in his gym clothes -- he did forget once!) We joked that the soccer game was his favorite part of the meet -- he didn't want to leave!
